Belly Dancers for Single Payer at the Supreme Court

June 27, 2012

A group calling themselves West Virginia Belly Dancers for Single Payer will be in front of the U.S. Supreme Court tomorrow. The belly dancers will be backed up by musicians, and will be doing a routine they call “Shake it Up for Single Payer.”

The group has done its routine at political events in West Virginia – for example at members of Congress’ offices to demand single payer Medicare for all Americans. (See poster here.)

“More than 120 Americans die every day from lack of health insurance,” said Russell Mokhiber of Single Payer Action. “The majority of Americans want single payer Medicare for all. So do the majority of belly dancers. We’ve been agitating in front of the White House, Congress and at Congressional offices around the country. Now it’s time to take it to the Supreme Court.”

Earlier this year, Single Payer Action filed an amicus brief before the Supreme Court, calling on the Court to strike down the individual mandate and pointing out that there is a constitutional way to cover every American – single payer national health insurance.

The West Virginia belly dance troupe will be in front of the Supreme Court on Thursday from 8 am to 11 am.
