Running Against Capito in West Virginia

August 7, 2011

Russell Mokhiber is running against Shelley Moore Capito in West Virginia. Okay, running may be too strong a word. Try jogging.

Over the next couple of weeks, Mokhiber will be jogging 10 miles in each of the 18 counties in the Second Congressional District.

Tomorrow — Monday, August 8 — Mokhiber will be jogging ten miles in Hardy County.

After his run he will go the Moorefield Senior Center (409 Spring Avenue, Moorefield) where staffers from Capito’s mobile office will be holding an event from 11 am to 1 pm.

Mokhiber and other citizens will be wearing t-shirts that say — Capito Resign.

“We’ll be telling the seniors tomorrow that earlier this year, our Congresswoman voted for legislation that the Wall Street Journal said would end Medicare,” Mokhiber said. “Capito says in a flyer she mailed in June that she is working to protect Medicare. Both can’t be true.”

“We want Capito to debate the issue. Did she vote to end Medicare? Or is she working to protect it? But so far, she has refused to debate.”

Citizens in the district are gathering signatures on a petition calling on Capito to resign.

They have put up a web site — capitoresign.org.

They have put up four billboards in the district.

And they are running radio ads.

In a press release, Capito’s office says that residents who come to the mobile office can “send a message to Congresswoman Capito.”

“We’ll be going to each of the mobile office stops. We want to send a message to Congresswoman Capito that she should resign,” Mokhiber said. “She voted with the big insurance corporations against her constituents. She voted with the big banks against her constituents. She consistently sides with the big corporate lobbyists against her own people.”

On Tuesday, the capitoresign.org team will be at the Berkeley County Senior Center North Site at the Marlowe Ruritan Club in Falling Waters from 11 am to 12:30pm.

On Wednesday, they will be at the Berkeley Springs Senior Center in Morgan County — 404 S. Green Street — from 11:15 am to 12:45 pm.

And on Thursday, they will be in Pendleton County in Riverton at the North Fork Senior Center from 11:30 am to 1 pm.
