Dr. Flowers to Dems: Vote Against Obamacare
September 24, 2009
Dr. Margaret Flowers wants the 86 co-sponsors of the House single payer bill (HR 676) to vote against Obamacare.
Dr. Flowers is a leader of the group Physicians for a National Health Program, whose 17,000 member doctors support a single payer, Medicare for All system for the United States.
“Single payer is the only system that will end the deaths, the bankruptcies and the suffering,” Dr. Flowers said.
Flowers has met a number of times in recent weeks with the author of the HR 676 – Congressman John Conyers (D-Michigan) – in an effort to get him to come out strongly for single payer.
To no avail.
Flowers said she was disappointed with Conyers.
“We need him more than ever right now,” Flowers said. “People across the nation are looking to him to come out strongly for this. But [Conyers is] continuing to play the same political games – with a lack of willingness to stand up and speak out against what is going on. We need him to be a strong leader and to come out strongly for single payer now.”
Flowers called Obamacare “a bailout for the insurance industries and the pharmaceutical companies.”
Flowers said that as a bloc, the 86 members of the House who have signed on to single payer should vote against Obamacare.
“If President Obama is not willing to take the lead, then it is the duty of the members of Congress to push him in that direction,” Flowers said.
