Senator Dodd: Single Payer Not Off the Table

June 24, 2009

Why is Senator Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) in trouble in his bid for
re-election in 2010?

Because he is ethically challenged.

According to today’s Roll Call, Dodd is facing complaints about getting unusually favorable mortgage terms from the now defunct Countrywide Financial.

And the purchase of property in Ireland from a business partner of a
person convicted of stock fraud for whom Dodd secured a pardon.

But also because he opposes what the majority of his constituents, the
majority of Americans, the majority of doctors and the majority of
health economists want — single payer national health insurance.

President Obama and the Democratic leadership have taken single payer
off the table.

Everyone admits it.

But not Senator Dodd.

Facing protests back home for his coziness with Wall Street and
insurance industry lobbyists, Dodd knows that he must pretend to be
open to single payer.

So, when we asked him why the Democratic leadership has taken single
payer off the table, Dodd just flat out denied reality.

Why did the Democratic leadership — from the beginning — take single payer off the table?

“They haven’t yet — I don’t think,” Senator Dodd said.

Single payer is still on the table?

“We’re talking about it,” Senator Dodd said.

Not.
